For the second year in a row the Red Wings would fall in the draft lottery, being jumped by 3 teams including the New York Rangers. In back-to-back years the Rangers moved into the top 3, moving up 3 spots in 2019 to win the 2nd overall pick, and winning the draft lottery moving up 14 spots in the 2020 draft. The Rangers qualified for 2020 NHL Playoffs and were eliminated in the Qualifier Round.
Originally scheduled to be held in Montreal, Quebec, the 58th NHL Entry draft was rescheduled and held remotely using a video conference format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 draft would mark draft with General Manager Steve Yzerman at the helm. With the 4th overall pick, Detroit would select RW Lucas Raymond of Frolunda (SHL).
