The Red Wings finished the 2018-19 regular season as 4th worst in the NHL with a 32-40-10 record, earning them the 4th best odds to win the draft lottery. The Red Wings were jumped by both the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks, moving them back two spots to own the 6th overall pick.
The 57th NHL Entry Draft, held at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia was the first chance Yzerman would have to acquire new players, taking over as General Manager and Executive Vice President just 63 days prior. Yzerman and the Red Wings selected Moritz Seider, a 6’4″ defenseman out of DEL Mannheim. Largely seen as a bit of a shock, Seider was frequently listed as a mid-to-low first-round pick by most draft analysts.
Yzerman inherited six draft picks within the top 100, including three second-round picks. The Red Wings selected four more defensemen including Antti Tuomisto (second round, 35th overall) and Albert Johansson (second round, 60th overall. Detroit added more depth and size with 6’8″ Swedish forward Elmer Soderblom (sixth round, 159th overall)

As of the 2021/22 season, Moritz Seider is the only player from the Red Wings’ 2019 draft class to make the NHL. He made an impact early. With time to develop in the SHL due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Seider progressed his game. Seen by many as the best player not in the NHL at just 20 years old. Seider lived up to the expectations, running away with the Calder Trophy (170 of the 195 first-place votes).

Seider showed poise in all areas of the game and was relied upon to kill penalties and run the power play, along with his even-strength duties. Seider logged north of 23 minutes a night and penciled himself in as a bonafide number-one defenseman at just 20 years old.
